Skillz Hosts Charity Esports Tournament for Red Cross Month
In celebration of Red Cross Month, Skillz is teaming up with the American Red Cross to raise money for disaster relief through a mobile esports tournament. This weekend, Skillz and the Red Cross are hosting a tournament from Saturday, March 20 at 10am PT until Sunday, March 21 at 10pm PT. Players can also view more information at redcross.org/skillz.
Almost 80 years ago, Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed March as Red Cross Month. This distinction honors those giving back through its life-saving mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies, which is powered by more than 90% volunteers. Since 1943, every U.S. president has proclaimed March as Red Cross Month.
This year, the two organizations are rallying the millions of players across the Skillz platform and American Red Cross donor base to help further the nonprofit’s mission. Amid the global pandemic, reports of tornadoes in Texas, snowstorms headed toward the western U.S., and much more, disaster relief has never been more necessary.
Proceeds from this weekend’s tournament will fund a new American Red Cross Community Emergency Vehicle. Every day, more than 24,000 people receive assistance from the American Red Cross – that’s about 1,000 people helped every hour of the day. Skillz is funding the purchase of the first type of community fleet vehicle that supports both blood services and disaster response needs.

Skillz and the American Red Cross have been long-term partners in support of disaster relief. In March 2020, Skillz and the American Red Cross teamed up to alleviate blood shortages as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Skillz and the Red Cross also partnered in 2019 to support communities affected by the California wildfires.
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds, and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Skillz is revolutionizing the way modern philanthropies interact with donors by making charity fundraising fun, engaging, and accessible to everyone. With its competitive mobile esports platform, Skillz has activated thousands of new nonprofit donors through charity tournaments that have benefited a diverse group of nonprofits, including the American Cancer Society, NAACP, American Red Cross, Susan G. Komen, and World Wildlife Fund.
